Welcome to Avatel

I have waited a long time to start a blog and with all of our company’s achievements this past year, I can’t wait any longer to share our successes.

We understand that 2009 proved to be a challenging year for Avatel. Confronting and overcoming challenges is an exhilarating experience. It does something to feed the soul and the mind; it makes you more than you were before and it strengthens the mental muscles and enables you to become better prepared for the next challenge to achieve success.

Avatel 2009 in Review

One of the definitions of achievement is: something accomplished by superior ability with special effort and great courage in spite of obstacles and discouragements.  Some notable Avatel achievements in 2009 were:

  •  Avaya 2009  Channel Partner of the Year
  • Named to the Avaya Business Partner Council
  • Voted Best place to work in Tampa Bay
  • Nominated for the Avaya Excellence in Selling award
  • Avatel customer participation in the Avaya Customer Showcase gallery

There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it. In bad market conditions, most companies (not Avatel) focus only on survival, not on improving their market alignment. In 2009 Avatel realized that to thrive in challenging times you must become more creative, learn innovative business skills, and network more to compete in this challenging economy.

Avatel believes that the programs we have successfully implemented in 2009 will allow us to see those long-term goals in 2010 and beyond. We learned how pursuing “relevance” was our compass and strategic filter during this downturn.  I am happy to say that Avatel gained its “relevance” when we were chosen as a winner of the  “Tampa Bay 2009 Best Places to Work” by the Buisness Journal, we were named to the Avaya Business Partner Council and even more when we achieved Avaya’s highest honor and was awarde the Avaya 2009  Channel Partner of the Year!!!

The usual tendencies for companies in their quest for business survival during these turbulent times would have been to get into the act of headcount reviews, budget freezes and reduction. However, overreacting to this situation or merely following the “order of practice of the industry” may handicap a company’s future growth. Avatel made the decision to take this opportunity of a downturn to consider how best to position ourselves for economic recovery. That is why Avatel did not “follow the pack”; instead of layoffs and hiring freezes we moved forward with additional headcount in our IOC division and made the decision to expand our Enterprise Division with a dynamic team of high-achieving engineering, sales and marketing professionals to capture significant growth opportunities in the enterprise market.

Many businesses scale back on customer care during downturns to save money. That approach will alienate customers and encourage them to seek an alternative.  That is why in the 4th Quarter 2009, Avatel created the Client Advocate Program because customer satisfaction has always been a core value of our organization, The Client Advocate Program, reflecting a fundamental shift in philosophy and practice, with regards to customer support is all about building and sustaining positive relationships and the need to take a proactive approach to consider the “entire customer experience”.

If there’s ever a time to keep getting better at what we do, it’s during a down economy. Continuously learning and improving is the only way to be more effective and efficient than ever before and to ensure we are doing everything in our power to out-do our competitors.  In 1st Quarter 2009 Avatel worked with Sandler Training to develop an advanced sales skills training course. This has enabled the Avatel sales staff to practice strategies and techniques, enjoy advanced development of skills interacting with prospects and customers, fine-tune their communication and decision-making skills and cultivate teamwork and inspire peak performance from team members.

Avatel 2010 – “In it To Win”

While Avatel is excited about this upcoming year, we will have to ask ourselves – Did we accomplish our goals in 2009?  Did we perform at our highest level of ability? By learning to appreciate our challenges and see the opportunities in them, we take our power back from the situations and circumstances of our lives. Our ability to appreciate difficulties, learn from them, and use them to our advantage, gives us an important insight into who we really are and how to create success and fulfillment in a conscious and deliberate way.

Winning companies like Avatel are the engines of a healthy society and nothing short of the foundation of a free and democratic society. That’s why winning is great. The reasons are simple. Winning in business is great because when companies win, people thrive and grow. Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Make winning a habit!! Determination, persistence and patience go hand in hand with business success. You’ll have to chop and change and try different things continually. Your best-laid plans will be met with disappointment and frustration. But your ability to persist and to continue seeking faster, better, more innovative ways of achieving your business goals is the key to Avatel’s future.

With all of the changes prevalent in our industry, 2010 is the year where Avatel will begin to strengthen our market position and take share. Despite the most challenging global economic climate faced in our lifetime, we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of the myriad of unprecedented opportunities that are now before us if we all work harder and smarter than ever before.

The Optimistic has the ability to see opportunity where others see problems; to clearly empathize with a client who has concerns and create a picture of how things will look once you’ve performed your magic. Optimists avoid gossip, they challenge beliefs, and they see a bright future and look beyond business cycles and talk of gloom.

“A Pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an Optimist sees an opportunity in every difficulty.” –  Winston Churchill

A good business strategy defines the direction and scope of an organization over the long-term, and will advance the company’s resources and meet market needs. Avatel will re-evaluate our company’s situation after a tough 18 months, we will set a new direction to transition from “survival” to “growth” mode, we will identify our growth opportunities for 2010 that will turn opportunities into bottom line results. Avatel will be an organization that can evolve and grow in this economy, which can modify itself as technology, skills, competitors, and the entire business changes. In order to stay competitive given today’s business challenges, Avatel will need to drive unprecedented operational efficiency as well as find new ways to innovate. We will identify emerging business opportunities & stay flexible enough to adopt new business models quickly in order to deliver growth through innovation. Opportunities for growth in competitive telecom markets will, among other things, be achieved by taking market share both from traditional competitors and new entrants. During these challenging economic times, Avatel will need to find new and creative ways to engage our customers and prospects and drive them to action.  We will maximize the effectiveness of our people; improve marketing and ramp up sales activities. We are committed to continuous innovation, taking appropriate risk to search out possibilities to drive performance and growth. Without change there can be no progress and without progress there can be no future.

Last thoughts:

In times of great change and ambiguity, how does Avatel stay focused on the right things, unless we know what are the right things. Our business values help guide us. Remember:

Avatel’s Mission – Responsive… Reliable… Resourceful

Our mission is to provide the finest-quality products and world class service to our customers and to do this more efficiently and economically than our competitors. Quality comes from a singular commitment to excellence. Excellence is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. Making Customer Satisfaction our #1 Priority – Living by the premise that by meeting and exceeding our customers’ needs, they will continue to do business with us and will recommend us to others. Avatel encourages and challenges us to live out our best thoughts, honor our purest motives, and achieve our most significant dreams.

Since much of the economy functions on attitude and confidence, all of the bad news has put many businesses in a hold pattern until they can see a little more reality. The reality is this: Even in a bad economy there is opportunity for Avatel!!! The secret to surviving in a down economy is opportunity recognition. The first step in opportunity recognition is to know and believe that there will always be opportunity for those who seek and pursue it. Regardless of how bad the economy may seem, people still buy and sell. People still have needs to fill and Avatel has products and services that meet those needs.

Those who are fired with an enthusiastic idea and who allow it to take hold and dominate their thoughts find that new worlds open for them. As long as enthusiasm holds out, so will new opportunities. The key that unlocks energy is desire. It’s also the key to a long and interesting life. If we expect to create any drive, any real force within ourselves, we have to get excited.  Enthusiasm is contagious.  If you are enthusiastic about Avatel’s winning abilities and the world class Avaya Solutions, you will be more successful. Life blows cannot break a person whose spirit is warmed at the fire of enthusiasm.  Ralph Waldo said, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”.

The New Year brings a sense of a fresh start to all of us at Avatel.  It is a time to learn from the mistakes of the past and try to build on our successes. Avatel must maintain and continue to grow a healthy business to withstand the current challenges of a slow economy.  Our business will depend on our core competencies, our skilled employees and a shared focus.  Doing business in tough times requires a tough attitude.  With a fresh perspective Avatel will be able to achieve our revenue goals in 2010 while holding true to our principles.

Life is a series of new beginnings and in every ordinary moment there are a thousand miracles to behold. Here’s hoping that you will reward yourself for any successful personal and business achievements. May this New Year bring all of our Avatel family members and friends many blessings of good health, dreams to come true, prayers to be answered, and gratitude for all.  In light of the many difficulties during the past year, we should count our blessings. Health, family, good friends and a positive attitude are the basic ingredients for success in any endeavor. May you find these in your personal journey and enjoy the fruits of a life full of opportunities.

  1. It’s for these reasons and more that even after being gone from the company for 2 1/2 years now, I still miss working for Avatel every single day. It’s a rare, sometimes once-in-a-lifetime experience that one gets the chance to work for people who care as much about their employees’ personal well-being as their work performances. I knew it then; I still believe it now, that I will never ever find a more satisfying, wonderful work family as the one I had when I was there. I know that Avatel will always be a success no matter what challenges it faces because of the talent and hard work of the management and employees. I’m waiting for you all to open up a South Carolina branch and should that ever happen, I’ll be first in line with my resume!
    Love and miss you all!
