We Can Make a Living or We Can Design a Life
The title and concept of this post came from a famous quote:
“We all have two choices: we can make a living or we can design a life”. ~ Jim Rohn
For more than 40 years, Jim Rohn honed his craft like a skilled artist-helping people the world over sculpt life strategies that have expanded their imagination of what is possible. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of our time, and thought of by many as a national treasure. Jim Rohn was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker whose work was influential in launching or furthering the careers of many others in the personal development industry, including Tony Robbins, Mark Victor Hansen, Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield.
This quote really makes me think. Make a living…design a life? What does that mean anyway? Are we putting too much emphasis on making a living at the expense of not making a life? Just making a living is easy. Basically, you study and learn how to do something, and then you find somebody willing to pay you to do that something.
What is a life by design and are we living one? Our destiny is in our hands, so how will we design it? So many people are living unfulfilled and totally frustrated lives because they are so caught up in the trap of making a living and have no real substance to life. Without creating the life we desire, we will not experience wealth, success, optimal health, empowering relationships, or wisdom.
We are all designers, architects and creators of our ideal life’s design. However, designing and creating our ideal life is not a magical thing that happens on its own. It takes action and decisions. We must have personal accountability and the belief that we are in control of our life and the decisions we make that shape our life and create our path.
We have all created our present situation by the choices we made in the past. If we chose to do nothing, then our situation reflects that. The quality of our life is our personal responsibility. This is the foundation of all personal development. A willingness to take personal responsibility for every aspect of our life gives us the ability to be the architect of our own reality and the designer of our own outcomes. We can either accept conditions as they are, or accept the responsibility for changing them.
At some point in our lives, we all dreamed of accomplishing great things and living a life of value and purpose. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to allow the demands and frustrations of daily living to dampen those hopes and squash those dreams. When this happens we begin to settle for just getting by.
The reality is that we all have the capacity to take charge of our lives and to make our dreams come true. Personal development is a doorway to a life that is both exciting and fulfilling – A life that is full of endless opportunities and amazing possibilities.
Our living experience can be whatever we want it to be, but it won’t just happen. To live a life of our own design, we have to make it happen. It’s the process of personal growth that allows us to truly enjoy life, to embrace each day as a thrilling journey with a spirit of adventure and discovery.
Whatever we choose to do, we must acknowledge that we are the only person responsible for our decisions and actions. Accepting responsibility is actually a very liberating experience. Once we recognize that we are the ones in control, it makes life much simpler.
